How to tune to Drop D with a tuner
Drop D tuning changes only the lowest string of standard tuning, lowering E2 to D2 for the string order D A D G B E. Select the sixth string, play it cleanly and loosen it until the tuner centers on D2.
Drop D string order
From low to high, tune to D2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. The upper five strings stay in standard tuning, so most familiar chord and scale shapes remain available.
Why guitarists use Drop D
The lowered sixth string extends the bass range and lets you play root-fifth-octave power chords with one finger across the lowest three strings. It is common in rock, metal, folk and fingerstyle arrangements.
